Campaign naming conventions: a simple template that fixes ad reporting

A practical campaign naming convention for Meta, Google, LinkedIn and TikTok ads. Copy the template, see real examples for real estate, clinics and agencies, and avoid the mistakes that break reporting.

3 min readBy the Zero Metrics team

Ask any performance marketer what breaks their reporting and you'll hear the same answer: campaign names. "New campaign 3 – copy", "Marina launch FINAL", "test ad Ahmed". Every one of them is a lead that can't be matched to its cost, and a decision made on guesswork.

A naming convention fixes this. It costs nothing, takes an afternoon to agree, and makes everything downstream possible: lead-to-ad matching, grouping by project or branch, and fair comparisons across platforms.

What a good naming convention does

A good convention makes each name:

  • Readable: anyone on the team can tell what the campaign is.
  • Parseable: tools can split the name into parts and group by them.
  • Consistent: the same thing is always spelled the same way, on every platform.
  • Short enough to survive lead form exports and CRM fields.

The template

Use one pattern for campaigns, then add detail at ad group and ad level.

Campaign: Vertical_Market_Project_Objective

Ad group / ad set: Audience_Placement

Ad: Format_Angle_Version

Use an underscore _ between parts and CamelCase inside a part. Never use spaces.

PartExamplesWhy it matters
VerticalRE, SRV, EDU, ECOMGroup results by business line
MarketDXB, AUH, SHJ, KSA, UKCompare cities and countries

AudienceInvestors, EndUsers, LAL1, RetargetLead quality by audience

Examples

Dubai real estate developer

  • Campaign: RE_DXB_MarinaLaunch_LeadForm
  • Ad set: Investors_FeedReels
  • Ad: Static_PaymentPlan_V2

Multi-branch clinic

  • Campaign: SRV_JLT_Implants_LP
  • Ad group: Women35plus_Search
  • Ad: RSA_FreeConsult_V1

Agency managing several clients

Add a client code at the start: ACME_RE_DXB_MarinaLaunch_LeadForm. Now one report can be split by client without separate exports.

Rules that keep it working

  1. Write the dictionary down. List the allowed codes for each part (DXB, not Dubai or dxb). Share it with everyone who launches ads.
  2. Use a builder, not memory. A shared sheet with dropdowns, or a naming tool, stops typos. Zero Metrics has a naming convention builder that generates every name from your rule.
  3. Keep the same name in UTMs. Lowercase the campaign name into utm_campaign so website leads match ad leads. See our UTM guide.
  4. Don't put dates in campaign names unless the campaign truly ends on that date. Reporting tools already know the date.
  5. Version ads, don't rename them. When you change a creative, publish V2 rather than editing V1, so results stay comparable.
  6. Review weekly. Check for names that don't match the pattern and fix them before the data piles up.

How the convention connects ads to the CRM

Lead forms on Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn can pass the campaign, ad set and ad name to your CRM. Website forms can pass them through UTM fields. When those names follow one pattern, each lead can be matched to the exact ad that produced it and to that ad's spend.

That is how you get from "this campaign brought 400 leads" to "this ad brought 31 viewings at AED 710 each". Without the convention, the join fails and the lead becomes "unattributed". Zero Metrics uses your naming rule to make this match every hour and flags any leads it cannot match, so you can fix the name at the source. Our guide on real estate lead tracking in Dubai shows the full flow.

Common mistakes

  • Different codes on different platforms (Meta says DXB, Google says Dubai). Reports split one market into two.
  • Free-text audiences like "ppl who liked page". Impossible to group.
  • Too many parts. Names over 80 to 100 characters get cut off in some exports. Keep only parts you will group by.
  • Changing the pattern mid-quarter without a mapping. Old and new names stop lining up.

The short version

Pick five parts, write the allowed codes down, use a builder, mirror the name in your UTMs, and check it weekly. Every report you build afterwards gets easier, and your leads finally find their ads.

See it on your own campaigns. Zero Metrics joins your ad accounts to your CRM and shows cost per lead, MQL, SQL and deal for every ad, refreshed every hour. Book a free 30-minute demo or see the product.

FAQ

Quick answers.

What is a campaign naming convention?

A fixed pattern for naming campaigns, ad groups and ads, such as Vertical_Market_Project_Audience_Format. It makes every name readable by people and by tools, so leads in your CRM can be matched back to the ad that brought them.

Which separator should I use in campaign names?

Use an underscore between parts and CamelCase inside a part, for example RE_DXB_MarinaLaunch. Avoid spaces, commas and special characters, because they break exports, UTM links and lookups.

Should I rename old campaigns?

Rename active campaigns where your ad platform keeps the history attached, and apply the convention to every new campaign from today. Keep a short lookup sheet for old names you cannot change.
